South Hadley Electric Light Department customers can take an active role in reducing their carbon footprints by participating in SHELD’s new Green Choice Program. Green Choice allows customers to voluntarily add a contribution onto their energy bills to ensure clean, renewable energy is delivered to the regional power grid on their behalf.
Customers can choose between a $10, $20, or $30 monthly contributions which is the equivalent of 3,000, 6,000, and 9,000 kilowatt-hours of clean power generated each year respectively. At the end of the year, SHELD uses the money earned from the Green Choice Program to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) on behalf of the department and its customers. A REC is generated each time one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy is generated and delivered to the grid.
