EV Charger Program

Monitor and Control Charging of Your EV from the Palm of Your Hand!

Groton Electric Light Department (GELD) has partnered with its energy efficiency program manager, Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company, (MMWEC), to provide discounted Wi-Fi-equipped Level 2 residential electric vehicle (EV) chargers to customers signing on to the NextZero Scheduled Charging Program.

What is a Scheduled Charging Program?

Scheduled charging determines when an EV charger will be powered. GELD offers a discounted rate for EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) owners who schedule their charging outside of peak energy hours, which helps the department better manage its electric load. Learn more by downloading GELD’s charging agreement or check to see if your EV model qualifies. Visit the Department of Energy Resource’s Alternative Fuels Data Center to compare different EV models.

How it Works

Between the peak hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on non-holiday weekdays, GELD customers will be charged $.16/kilowatt-hour for charging their EVs. Outside of this time period, GELD customers will be charged the reduced rate of $.119/kilowatt hour to encourage off-peak EV charging.

Emergency Scheduling

Sometimes major events happen on the electrical system outside of our control. To respond to these events, emergency scheduling allows GELD to temporarily access your charger via Wi-Fi connection to lower your charging rate until the event passes. This limits strain to our system and allows us to continue to deliver low-cost, reliable electricity.

Charger Incentive

GELD customers are eligible for a $400 rebate on chargers for EVs in exchange for enrolling the charger into the Scheduled Charging Program. GELD customers with PHEVs are eligible to receive $200 or $300 off the purchase of a charger. Dollar amount off is determined by kWh battery capacity. Refer to the table below for more information.

Vehicle TypeEV Charger Incentive

*Only ChargePoint & JuiceBox Smart Level 2 chargers are eligible for enrollment/rebates.
